Vehicle Type Help
Cross Sound Ferry’s Ticketing and Reservation System allows customers to book reservations for most types of vehicles and passengers through our Website. Choosing your vehicle correctly will help avoid delays and/or additional costs when you arrive at the ferry terminal. The following information will help customers make appropriate choices:
Passenger Vehicles (Standard Auto, Large Auto, and Extra-Large Auto)
We have developed three categories: Standard Auto, Large Auto, and Extra-Large Auto. We have classified each Make/Model passenger vehicle as Standard Auto, Large Auto, or Extra-Large Auto based on a combination of their dimensions: length, width, and height. Some very low clearance sports cars will also be considered “Large Auto” vehicles because their low clearance restricts the areas they can be parked.
During the reservation process, customers will need to indicate which Make and Model vehicle they will be traveling in. Our system will select the appropriate ticket type: Standard Auto, Large Auto, or Extra-Large Auto. If a customer arrives in a different Make Model vehicle, they may be subject to an upcharge or refund at the terminal.
- For example: Ford Expeditions and Ford Explorers are Large Autos. Ford Escapes and Ford Fusions are Standard Autos.
Any passenger vehicle that is 20 - 23 feet long or more than 7 feet tall and less than 23’ will be considered an Extra-Large Auto, and be subject the Extra-Large Auto fare. All vehicles 20’ – 23’ long and less than 8’6” wide, including small trucks, campers, dual wheeled pickups, etc. will now be recognized as Extra-Large Autos. Some of these vehicles used to be charged by the foot. If a cargo rack or bike rack causes a vehicle to be 20 – 23 feet long or more than 7 feet tall, it will be considered an Extra-Large Auto.
- For example: A Ford F-150 that is less than 20 feet long is a Large Auto. A Ford F-150 that is 22 feet long is an Extra-Large Auto.
Standard Auto, Large Auto, and Extra-Large Auto tickets will have a Base fare for Off-Peak Departures, and a Full Fare for Peak departures and for tickets sold at the Terminal. All three categories are eligible for Priority fares and Rewards Discount Fares (Reservations Required).
Commercial Vehicles (Includes all vehicles more than 23’ long)
All Vehicles that are more than 23’ long will be considered Commercial Vehicles and charged for their overall length at the applicable per-foot rate.

New Fare Structure for Commercial Vehicles
Effective March 1, 2022, “Commercial Vehicles” will follow the same PEAK and OFF-PEAK fare structure as Autos. We are replacing the “Commercial Vehicle” Monday – Thursday per-foot rate and Friday – Sunday per-foot rate with a Base (OFF-PEAK) rate and a Full (PEAK) rate.
For “Commercial Vehicle” reservations, the applicable per-foot rate will be determined by the departure designation, PEAK or OFF-PEAK.
Tickets sold at the terminal (no reservation) will always subject to the higher Full fare, so reservations are highly recommended.
All customers who book reservations on an OFF-PEAK departure at the Base fare, but arrive late to the terminal and don’t get on their reserved departure, will be subject to an upcharge to the higher Full fare.
If you have any further questions about choosing your vehicle type, please contact our Reservation Department. 860-443-5281 or 631-323-2525
